Everyone likes sleeping on bunk beds, especially kids. Bunk beds for kids are designed with one bed on top of another that are connected by a vertical ladder.  Well, that’s how they appear anyways. Really they are connected with brackets on each of the legs. A rail is also attached across the length of the top bunk for added safety.

Kids are big fans of bunk beds for kids and they wind up becoming a place where they can hide away and gain some privacy. Kids who sleep on the bottom bunk sometimes pretend as though they are inside a deep cave where adventures are lurking in every corner.  Imagine throwing an old sheet into the mix and they have their very own indoor fort!

Parents love bunk beds as well.  Not only do they enjoy watching their kids get excited over them, they also like the fact that they are versatile and can become two separate twin beds if need be.  They are also an excellent space saver allowing two children to sleep in one room without the bulk of two beds in a smaller sized bedroom.

There are many types of bunk beds for kids available on the market and I’d like to help you narrow down your search. The most common design of bunk beds is the twin over twin where two single sized beds are stacked one on top of the other. Consider this option the standard option in bunk bed selections.  They are the most compact and can be used esthetically as is or as two identical twin beds in one room.  The latter can be a very charming option when transforming a bedroom into a guest room.  Laying the bunk beds as two separate twin beds can also be the ideal option when getting younger children who share a bedroom started out.  They may be too young to place on the top bunk so perhaps using them as two beds is the safer option until they (or one of the children) gets a little older.

Another popular option in the bunk bed for kids category is the twin over full or double bed.  These kids beds are designed so that the lower bunk is a full bed and the top bunk is a small standard sized bed (or twin bed). This bunk bed option is especially great for safety concerns.  Heaven forbid, if the child on the top bunk falls over the safety railing, he/she will more than likely land on the larger lower bunk bed.  Twin over full beds are also a space saving solution for three children in one room.  Two children can sleep on the bottom bunk (the younger two of the three) while the oldest child can take the top bunk.

Some bunk beds for kids come with a drawer under the bottom bunk. This can prove to be by far one of the best features of bunk beds (at least according to parents).  Imagine an extra space for storing blankets, throw, seasonal clothing, or even a spot for your child to store accessories, and other personal items.  What a fantastic idea!

Loft beds are another popular option and possibly a favorite among older children and those who don’t mind sleeping in an elevated bed.  With loft beds, only the top bunk is available for sleep and the lower bunk is replaced with a study table, closet, vanity area or computer area.  Some varieties have a lower bunk as an option but the lower bunk will not be as the traditional bunk bed for kids as they are usually placed perpendicular from the top with side shelves, etc.

Before buying bunk beds for kids, make sure you do your part in researching the specifications you might need for the room they will be placed in.  Think long term as well. When  the kids outgrow the bunk bed, what will it be used for?  If you plan on selling it once the kids have outgrown it, you are best to choose a less trendy style.  Stick to wood construction with a neutral finish.

You should also consider taking some extra safety precautions when purchasing bunk beds for kids. Even though the beds are equipped with a rail, there is also the chance that a child could fall off the top bunk.  Rare, but it could happen. For this reason, it may be wise to invest in a bed fall mat. The mat absorbs impact when a child falls and is easy enough to clean with a washing machine. A simple air mattress or old crib mattress will do the job as well.  Children below 6 are not advised to sleep on the top bunk because of immature brain functions. Those who take this risk must make sure that the top bunk is properly equipped with guard rails to prevent the child from falling out. To ensure that the ones sleeping on the top bunk don’t fall off, you can add a night light feature on the rails or the ladder. The one on the lower bunk can choose to have a curtain installed so the light won’t bother them while they sleep.

Other safety measures include ensuring that the ladder that leads to the top bunk is firmly secured so your child won’t get injured while climbing up or down. Always prioritize your children’s safety above all else when looking for any type of kids bed. Before showing your children their new bunk bed furniture, take the time to explain the risks and safety precautions that they must keep in mind at all times.
