There can be no doubt about it: girls love to dress up for any occasion. Whether they’re your or old, girlish or tomboy, a girl will always love to look pretty for one day. When your child gets picked to be a flower girl, it can be a huge compliment for your child. A flower girl is the main attraction of any wedding- next to the bride of course. Flower girls herald that a bride is coming and so when your child makes her way down the aisle, all eyes will be on her as the guests excitedly look at your child’s smashing gown. In the olden days, flower girls represented a woman’s journey from childhood to adulthood. The flower girl would drop pieces of rice or rose petals on the ground to signify fertility and lasting happiness for the bride and groom.
Themed weddings are now extremely popular and every wedding nowadays has a motif to match the day. It is the bride’s choice (oh I guess the groom has a say too!) to decide on the color and – depending on the agreement- the type of cloth to be used for making the flower girl dresses. Some brides give cloths to the mothers, expecting them to use the material for the girls dresses, while others pay for an entire dress to be made along with their wedding gown. It really depends on the agreement between the bride and the mother.
If you’ve received material for your child’s dress, ask the bride if you can add a splash of color to the dress. While some brides give you creative freedom for the design, others may not be so happy that you decided to add a different color to the dress. Monotone colors can lengthen your child’s body, while employing two colors on a child’s dress can look striking in pictures. Using two colors can also balance a dress color that doesn’t match your child’s skin tone.
Flower girl dresses are often miniaturized versions of adult dresses, but there is one important aspect that is never absent from the dress- the sash. The sash is usually built right below the chest area, giving the dress an empire look. This sash can be tied into a ribbon either in the front or the back. It signifies purity and fertility in the bride as well.
When choosing a design for your child’s dress, take her height and age into consideration. Toddlers are a little clumsy and have trouble balancing so their dresses should be above the knees or ankles so they don’t trip and fall while walking down the aisle. Short dresses can also be used on very active children. Older children who are well behaved can have dresses that are an inch or so higher than the ankle. Again, be sure to discuss the length of the dress with the bride.
Flower girl dresses are very versatile. When it comes to designs, go for simple classic beading and styles so that your child could re-use it on special occasions. Over the top designs could be re-used in pageants, consigned at specialty shops, or used as a Halloween costume!
